Arthur Ashe Jr. National Softball Team

Join me in congratulating recent alum Jessica Mullins, who was just named one of twelve players nationally on the Arthur Ashe Softball team, an honor given to athletes of color with especially distinguished academic and athletic careers. Jess is the only student-athlete, male or female, from the Northwest Conference to be named to any of the 26 teams. She was an intern in Lewis & Clark’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. Kudos to her professors, coaches, mentors, and most especially to Jess herself!

2010 Fund for Theological Education

Oregon Consular Corps and Clinton Presidential Foundation

It is my pleasure to announce that Karen Lickteig ’12 (International Affairs major and one of this year’s student co-organizers of the International Affairs Symposium) received two prestigious scholarships, one from the Oregon Consular Corps and another from the Clinton Presidential Foundation. As a William Jefferson Clinton Scholar at the American University in Dubai, Karen will join a small cohort of ten American students selected to “strengthen the capacity of people in the United States and throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence.” (Please see http://www.aud.edu/admissions/clinton.asp for more information.)

Karen acknowledges–and I add my thanks to–Cyrus Partovi, Paul Powers, Oren Kosansky, and Lucrecia Choto for guidance during the application process for the Clinton Scholarship. Greg Caldwell and Andrew Cortell did great work with the Oregon Consular Corps Scholarship program. And I also thank John Bates, former L&C faculty member and now a Trustee of the College, for helping to make the Oregon Consular Corps Scholarship a reality for college students in Oregon.

National Science Foundation Graduate Scholarships

It is my pleasure to announce that eight (yes, eight!) Lewis & Clark graduates have received prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships, awarded by the National Science Foundation to graduate students who show promise as leaders in their fields. As far as I can tell, this is a record for Lewis & Clark. The students receiving fellowships are (with their fields and current graduate institutions also noted):

Marjorie Weber – Ecology – Cornell University
Amelia Still – Biochemistry – University of Wisconsin, Madison
Benjamin Ross – Evolutionary Biology – University of Washington
Charles Morgan – Chemical Biology – University of California, San Francisco
Conor Jacobs – Neuroscience – Stanford University
Katie Holzer – Ecology – University of California, Davis
Claire Fassio – Cell Biology – University of California, Berkeley
Andrea Bailey – Animal Behavior – University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

In addition, Rebecca Duncan, currently studying genetics at the University of Miami, received an Honorable Mention.

To place these awards in perspective, I am happy to report that this year Lewis & Clark generated more NSF Graduate Fellowships than did Williams, Middlebury, Bowdoin, Pomona, Davidson, Haverford, Vassar, Wesleyan, Grinnell, Smith, Colgate, Hamilton, Colby, Oberlin, Colorado, Bates, Reed, UPS, Whitman, University of Portland, and Willamette–too name only a few local and national peers. (My thanks to Gary Reiness for this piece of research.)

Our students deserve much credit for their achievements, and so do members of this excellent faculty who, time and again, prove to the rest of the world the value of a liberal arts education in the development of academic talent and leadership potential.

2010 Fulbright & Goldwater Awards

It is my pleasure to report that three of our students have received national honors. Alex Simon ’11 (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) and Irena Bierzynzki ’11 (Chemistry) received Goldwater Scholarships, a national award given to science students with great promise as leaders in their fields. Jessica Houston ’10 (International Affairs major and Russian minor) received a Fulbright award, which she will use to be a language assistant at a Russian university next academic year.
